A Moving "Roe"

We spent this afternoon at a performance of the play "Roe", written about the Roe v Wade decision on choice.  What a mind-blowing play.  No judgments made, just an attempt to show the backstory from the perspective of attorney Sarah Weddington and Norma  McCorvey (Jane Roe).   We highly recommend this play.   Last night it was "The Wiz", a beautifully choreographed and costumed version of the old war-horse of the 1970s.  The cast was superb.   The over the top bling was even better.  Great fun.

Dinner at the Winchester Inn was superb:  parsnip and purple carrot soup with crème fraîche, halibut for Ben, ballotine of rabbit for John.  Willamette Valley pinot gris.  Lovely.

Ashland is as gorgeous as ever.

Oregon... and bits and pieces

We are in Ashland, Oregon.  Here for our visit to the Shakespeare Festival, which begins with a performance of "Roe" this evening.  We're looking forward to it, and to visiting with our friends from previous years.

It's been a hectic week putting it all together.   We had thought to clean out the fridge and fix a small dinner but ended up with a dinner party Monday night that didn't finish till 11PM.  Getting up at 5AM to get to Baltimore Airport became an even bigger chore, but the visit with amigos from Mexico was lots of fun.

The flights out to Sacramento yesterday were cramped, of course, middle seats for both of us, but not bad.  We brought a picnic and enjoyed it in Las Vegas Airport, amidst the gambling machines.  It was our transit point to Sacramento (Sacto in the local argot).   Sacramento's new terminal has a superb sculpture of a rabbit (perhaps a big hare) in the main hall.

We had a fine time last night in Sacramento, with dinner at Paragary's, a superb locavore restaurant in the older gentrifying section of the city, close by friends Richard and Andres' home.   A lovely Peachy Canyon Zin, wood roasted mussels and light garganelli with prosciutto, arugula and English peas for John and a gazpacho of melon, followed by roasted beets and smoked trout for Ben.  Friend Richard enjoyed a very fine salad and a skirt steak.  The conversation was lively, witty and concerned about the state of the world and the US political spheres.

Today we stopped in Woodland, CA on the way north for coffee, where barrista Gloria did a fine foam job for Ben's XXXXDry Skim Cappuccino (now redefined as "bone dry."  We drove through some agricultural areas and enjoyed the fields of sunflowers.  Then the long  I-5 trip north to Oregon, with lunch in Weed at the Hi-Lo Cafe.
