Rhode Island and Pittsburgh

After the beach weekends, it was time to be responsible. We needed to celebrate our family and friends' rites of passage. And do some entertaining at home. Our first visitors were our friend Adrienne and her daughters from France coming over to visit family in Rhode Island and friends. We had a delightful few days in Washington with them as they explored the city, its being daughter Billie's first visit to her capital. Daughter Lucie had been a year earlier.

We drove with them to Providence, to visit Adrienne's dad and mother, John's advisor at Brown, for a lunch, and his nephew Matt's destination wedding in Newport, Rhode Island. A delightful series of events. First were to parties at our friend Elaine's home at North Farm, Bristol...a cocktail party with Narragansett Bay as the backdrop, and the second night a delightful dinner party with Bill and Julie.

Then the following night, John's brother Andrew had taken over the patio of the Atlantic Shores Club in Middletown on First Beach for a night-before party for his son Matt's wedding to Brooke. Wonderful to see John's family and some of their old friends.

The wedding the following day overlooked the bay and was a thoroughly enjoyable event, but sad too because it would the last time they would see many friends and family as they readied a move to Denver.

We returned to Washington for a mere ten days before heading off to Pittsburgh for a one night stay to celebrate our friends', Tom and John, 25th anniversary. A good evening at the Walnut Street Grille in Pittsburgh with a pleasant Malbec wine. We saw friends we had not seen in many many years. It's after all, 25 years since we left Pittsburgh for Washington.

We have also done two major celebrations--a get together of old friends about two weeks ago here at our house, with David and Galen, Hastings and Doug, and Lamar, enjoying lovely wines and a roast loin of pork. The second, a birthday party for our friend Mike, with several of his friends enjoying a barbecued leg of lamb...and a Cotes du Rhone.

We ready ourselves now for a trip to Asbury Park, New Jersey tomorrow with anticipation.
